A girl I went out with recently (for the first and last time) got a little flustered when it came time to pay and I used a coupon to pay for the meal and she saw it.
“You’re using a coupon? On our date?” she asked me. I had to pause for a moment and count to three to think of a bit more tactful way to reply vs my first instincts.
“If they didn’t want you to use it, then they wouldn’t have made it available.” I replied. (I was actually thinking that if she wanted a no coupon meal then we could have much easily gone for the McDonald’s Dollar menu and she could have had the same appetizer, main course, drink and dessert for even less while I was paying full price for everyone to see.)
I asked her if it was a big deal, and she replied “No, I guess not” with a little sigh added.
Now as bad as I am reading signals sometimes, this one I picked up loud and clear. This young woman was definatelly hurt that I had received a discount for our experience out. This somewhat baffeled me since she paid nothing and so the net cost for her didn’t change in the least bit, but the perception that I paid less changed the whole perception of everything in her mind.
