5 tips for meeting your date’s family (Holiday style)

Posted by Frugal Dater On November - 25 - 2009

928966_christmas_turkey_1The holiday seasons, at least before hand, always bring to mind a feeling of happiness and joy. But as they’ve gotten here reality starts to set in and most years the wheels come off at some point in time.

If you plan on either 1) going to your boyfriend or girlfriend’s house or 2) having them and their family over then take a look at our top 5 tips for meeting families to keep the stress (and the crazy) to a minimum this holiday season. grey1

Brief (or get briefed) on topics that are off limits. Throughout your dates I’m sure there’s been a story or two (or more) that has come up about their family. Many of these are funny and or scary. Many of these stories are OFF LIMITS during family dinners especially to those not accepted inside the circle yet. You need to know what you can and can’t bring up as topic starters.

grey2Don’t get sucked in to controversial topics. These are traps. One of the best things is to respond that  you don’t have enough information on both sides of the issue to form an informed opinion. At this point the family member will probably give you their arguments on the hot topic letting you know where they stand on the issue. TAKE NOTES because if you do know about these issues (hot ones for 2009 might be things like Healthcare, unemployment, anything political) then giving your honest opinion might put you on the wrong side of the table. grey3

Give an offer to help a little .
Offering to help shows that you’re trying to make an effort. Believe me, it’s much better to offer and have that card in your back pocket then to not have offered at all and be guilted about that during the whole ride home (or have their mother hold that over you for the rest of your relationship  that you never even offered to help )grey4Compliment the Food.
Throwing the cook the bone, no matter if it’s a family member or extended family member – deservingly or not. Might mean that you get a bone thrown your way later during the holiday break.

grey5Don’t Get too wrapped up in the Football / Television.
Yes it’s the safe haven when you’re trying to escape from everything, and it might be your one way to connect with some of the males at the event but watch that TV sparingly or the women at the event will write you off as just another good for nothing guy.
