One of the most popular postings last year was the listings of all the free movies available around the country. We have found more of the free movies being put on by the National Geographic Society in Washington DC. Now since it’s being put on by National Geographic these won’t be films that you would usually see in major theaters but rather documentaries that are a little more insightful. If you’re into learning and documentaries then this could be a perfect weekend afternoon adventure (especially if it looks like it’s going to be a little rainy or overcast).

6 p.m. – Chen Lo and the Liberation Family The distinctive sound of this dynamic collective draws from historic and contemporary events, simple elements of life, and a myriad of musical influences such as hip hop, jazz, blues, kwaito, soul, rock & roll, R&B, afro-beat, and pop. Chen Lo and Ken White combined forces in 2007 to create a hip hop ensemble that maintains the genre’s core ingredients, while incorporating the texture of live instrumentation. They have performed with Last Poets and CL Smooth and at Crash Mansion, CMJ Music Festival, and on MTV.

7:15p.m. – Little Joe McLerran Quartet drawn from the ranks of Tulsa’s finest, who came together specifically for The Rhythm Road, this ensemble brings blues to life through the study and performance of this unique American roots genre. In its unique approach, this ensemble presents blues and American roots as a soup recipe which has been stirred, mixed, handed down, and revised by generations of people who brought their music from all over the world to America

FrugalDaters, time for another free concert – this one is at Pentegon Row as part of their 7th Annual Summer Rock at the Row Summer Concert Series.

Coming up on the 20th of August is Taylor Carson – here’s what OnTap Magazine had to say about him:

On his third album, “Standing Alone,” Arlington-based singer/songwriter Taylor Carson treads familiar musical terrain, but this time he’s walking alone. Featuring nothing but Carson’s vocals over guitar (or piano in the case of “Where We’ve Been”), the album reflects years of steady solo gigging around the area honing his craft. His songwriting is sharp, his voice polished and his guitar work is subtle but accomplished. Carson compares favorably to obvious influences like John Mayer, and peers like Matt Nathanson, Jason Mraz and Gavin DeGraw. Catch him on Friday, May 9th at Best Cellars in Clarendon for an acoustic show and wine tasting and on Saturday, May 10th at Whitlow’s on Wilson. -OnTap Magazine

Coming up on the 13th of August is Brother Shamus – here’s what OnTap Magazine had to say about them:

Now this is some good music. Sophisticated, varied bluesy rock. Brother Shamus’ recent release “Manifest,” the Arlington group’s first full-length effort, is foot-tapping funky and lyrically strong. The title track starts slowly, then picks up, and you realize this band means business. The song “State” is more funky (“forget the sweet sunshine/if you’re impatient for a taste of the underground,” sings Todd Miller). The upbeat “Josephine” has more of a groove (“killing time is killing me”), and “Reverends and Spartans” is a beautiful, smoky ballad. The saxophone kicking off “Hypnotic Moon” is killer, and the musicianship is crisp throughout. This is good chillin’ music, good cruisn’ music and no doubt solid live. Definitely worth a pick up. -OnTap Magazine (Dec. 2006)
